Wall-E - A Movie Review?
By: John Vinson
I know that Tech Believes is supposed to be a site dedicated to technology. So you might be asking yourself why I would be conducting a movie review. The answer is because Wall-E got me thinking about all kinds of things after seeing it last night. Also it’s a movie based around technology so I figured it was relevant.
Wall-E, in case you haven’t heard is the newest collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Disney. The movie follows a trash sorting/piling robot who was the last robot left turned on when humans left Earth. In the future humans have turned into mindless apathetic drones put under the umbrella of a large corporation “Buy N Large”. Earth has become inhospitable due to the strain put on it from human’s consumerism, so we’ve taken to space. It has been 700 years since humans have left, and Wall-E goes about his business, which involves him collecting trash and mashing it into small cubes and stacking them. Throughout the years Wall-E has been able to see humanity through the products we’ve left behind. Through this study of our products Wall-E himself has turned into a human, atleast a human-like personality. Like all humans he’s desiring the company of another, which is found in his friend, a nameless roach. That is until ‘Eve’ a female-like robot shows up on a mission to Earth;of course Wall-E and her become friends. From this point on I won’t tell anymore of the story due to spoilers, but needless to say Wall-E gets caught up in an intriguing story alongside his new companion Eve.

Wall-E Shows More Heart And Humanity Than Any Character In Recent Movie History
From the get go it’s obvious that Wall-E has a message to tell, unlike previous Pixar films. What makes Wall-E so great in its ‘message telling’ is that it isn’t forced down your throat like other movie makers (*cough* Michael Moore *cough* Al Gore). Instead Wall-E relies on humor, wit, and heart to paint a picture of the road that humanity is going down.
Another great aspect of the movie is the technology mainly based around robots that is present in the film. Although we’re far from seeing robots fly off into space, it wasn’t such a stretch to see some of the robots performing everyday duties that we take for granted. ‘AI’ was another prevalent technology seen in the movie, and begs the question ‘Will we be able to create human-like emotions in a computer program?’.
Wall-E is a movie that has so many different things to offer movie-goers. It has a cute if slightly odd romantic story, some spot-on animation and action sequences, and a wonderfully put together message for humanity. I would say that Wall-E has more heart that any movie I’ve seen in a very long time. The movie truly reminds us what it is to be human, and how to not take for granted the very things we rely on day after day. I’m not sure what ’score’ I would give it so let’s just say you need to go see this movie and get lost in the wonder.
