Microsoft Secondlight, Multi-Touch Display

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I’m not sure what practical applications of this prototype from Microsoft would be? Perhaps you use the surface images for a cool presentation.

Of course, just because there might not be any real world use for Microsoft Secondlight doesn’t mean it isn’t amazing to watch.

Online Banking Gets Help From IBM

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

With all sorts of hackers, malware out there, banking online can be a risky adventure. Who know’s who’s monitoring bank sites when we get on to check our balances, pay bills, and withdraw funds. Luckily, IBM is looking to make the process somewhat safer.

The device is shaped like a USB stick. It provides a secure channel between your PC, and the bank’s server. Instead of connecting through your PC, which may or may not have viruses, and spyware.

IBM’s device has its own integrated display, so everything you conduct is directly used through the USB stick.

The device is still in development stages, but IBM has mentioned that they will begin bank trials very soon.

Are Terrorists Tweeting?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

The mind doesn’t tend to shift to terrorism when talking about cell phones, and sites like Twitter. I’d say the big generalization for that market is mostly 14/f’s. Although this is false because most adults are getting in on the action as well. We can add another group to this long list in the ‘connected’ world. Terrorists.

In this PDF file, there is a long list of different cell phone, and website technologies that terrorists are already using. If you’re to believe the report.

The first part of the article states how terrorists could be or are using many of the technologies found on current smartphones. The first is the GPS navigation options that many people use when travelling. Only instead of being used for family vacation, it’s being used for terrorist activities.

Other voice technologies that are being reported for terrorist use, are voice changers and the SKYPE service.

Probably the most surprising report was the use of Twitter by some of the terrorist networks. Just like groups that tweet about gardening, or sports, or whatever issue. The article claims there are extremist Twitter groups who are using the service to voice opitions, and concerns with one another.

You can take the report for what you will. They do list references with their claims. Most of them being translations of extremist sites. Read the PDF and decide for yourself.

Google Android Teaming Up With MySpace

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

The first G1 Google Android phones will go on sale tonight, in San Francisco at 6pm PST. It could be debated that the Google Android phones are releasing at, or even more hype than the Apple iPhone. I guess it would all depend on who you talk to, whether or not one is receiving more hype.

Only one store will be selling the G1 today, with all of the 3G coverage areas getting their chance tomorrow. The big piece of news it the MySpace App that will come with the G1, here’s a press release with information.

LOS ANGELES—October 21, 2008—MySpace, the world’s premier social network and leading mobile social network, today announced a free, new MySpace Mobile experience customized for Android and available via the Android Market. More than two million daily unique users visit MySpace’s mobile website, and according to ABI Research 70 percent of people who use social networks on mobile have visited MySpace.

“MySpace users will love the new Android integration with cool features like instant photo uploading and access to the latest shows from their favorite bands,” said John Faith, vice president and general manager of Mobile for MySpace. “We want to ensure that all users have access to their global MySpace network while they’re on-the-go, and we believe Android is a natural fit for an optimized MySpace Mobile experience.”

The MySpace Android application lends itself to a personal, unique MySpace experience and allows for a deep integration with the device including:

* Instant photo uploading from an Android device to a MySpace profile
* Check out tour schedules on band profiles
* View and comment on photos, profiles, and bulletins
* Search and add new friends
* Send and read messages
* Update and view mood and status

The MySpace Android application is integrated exclusively with Shazam, the world’s leading mobile music discovery provider. The integration allows MySpace users to identify music by holding the phone towards an unknown song and connect to the artist’s MySpace page. From there you can see band information, check out photos of the band or artists and even check Upcoming Shows schedules.

“We are excited about this collaboration,” said Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam. “It allows users to discover music at the point of inspiration and benefit from MySpace’s’ unique and rich content.”

MySpace has a deep commitment to provide our mobile users with the social tools to discover, share, connect, and communicate on-the-go. MySpace’s mobile lineup includes the MySpace mobile website, http://m.myspace.com, and several integrated applications for specific devices. MySpace has developed applications for Android, Sidekick, iPhone, and is currently developing an application for Blackberry.
